Translators usually settle on something like: Sawubona is the Zulu greeting commonly translated as 'I see you.' The traditional reply, 'Yebo, sawubona,' means 'Yes, I see you too.' But the greeting carries weight that 'hello' does not: to see someone, in the Zulu sense, is to acknowledge their full personhood — their history, their lineage, their presence in this moment. In modern leadership, customer experience, and personal relationships, sawubona names the discipline of being genuinely present with another person. It is a defensible translation. But translation is the surface.
